A Typical American Restaurant In The Heart Of Krakow Jeffs

My dearest friends,

I know lately I have been out of tune and I shared here more than the usual amount out movie reviews upon some of my favourite period movies and animations. This is not an excuse post to tell you I am sorry... life has taken over us and priorities change. In the last month we have been very much involved with a combination of holidays like Christmas and New Year VS. The moving out of the old flat and creating our new home in our new apartment. I was involved into selecting the furniture, the color of the paint and the panels, buying new things for the kitchen and bathroom and the house in general. We first slept in the new home only almost 3 weeks ago and we finished painting the hallway 2 days ago... We still find items we need to buy for the house but the progress was marvellous due to Mareks brothers - a special thank you goes to Michal and Rafal :*

But I knew I wanted to share with you a place in Kraków for a long while but I did not get a chance to sit in front of the computer and write about it. A huge thank you goes as well to my awesome husband for giving me Samsung S4 as a present - for a freak social media fan like me, its purrrrrrrrfect! So I can read and write blog posts wherever I am and whenever I wish. So here I am!

My favourite dish has an amazing cheese dip! <3

Today I will tell you about Jeffs Neighborhood Grill & Bar - or as the locals know it: Jeffs. With a rank of 417 out of 894 restaurants in Kraków on TripAdvisor, it gathered 59 written reviews on the same site, with a grade of 3.5 out of 5 stars. The restaurant is open from 10 am to the last customer, all days of the week ;) it is located on ul. Podgorska 34. That means Galeria Kazimierz at the last floor, in the food court, right in front of the Cinema City. Its always lovely to do a combination of a good movie + dinner at Jeffs. That is what we did the last 2 times we went for a movie to Cinema City - for The Mockingjay and The Hobbit/The Battle of the Five Armies. We recommend that as it is a perfect evening plan :)

The offer is quite extensive from breakfast to brunch to lunch to dinner or just small treats. The beautiful side is that everything is cooked in typical American way with special ingredients exported from "The Land Of All Dreams Come True". As I lived there for 4 months and Marek for 5 years, as soon as we got there and tasted the food we were instant fans of Jeffs. The waitresses are always nice and smiling and each time we went there we had a short visit from the manager of the room, asking if everyone is alright and to our taste. Very good customer service ;) The portions are huge, typical North American. My typical drink is always lemonade ( 7 zloty for 0.33 l) and I like to order the Jeffs Buffalo Wings (12 pieces - you can see them in the picture above - for 21.90 zloty - they can do them spicy or regular).

You can always contact them on Facebook or call them and setup a reservation for a table. It opened in 2001 and running ever since :) The cuisine is signalled as: American (New), American (Traditional), Back to My Photos, Breakfast, Brunch, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Seafood and Steakhouses. You can pay cash or by card (Visa and even American Express). You can see their full menu on their Website and see in advance what you can order ;) We recommend it with all our heart and we believe that if ever you are in Krakow your should give it a go ;)

Ice Krakow The Perfect Expo Concert Hall

Dearest hearts,

Last week I had the opportunity of joining the team from my workplace to the brand new congress hall - Ice Krakow, located on Marii Konopnickiej 17 - for the Career Expo of the Spring of 2015. It was my first time visiting this place and I was pleasantly impressed by the modern and simple, yet effective, way that the architects designed this place. The Ice Krakow was opened with great publicity last October 2014, with the inaugural event/concert Here and Now. The main message of the work - the concert Here and Now - created by Zbigniew Preisner, one of Poland’s most outstanding composers, especially for the occasion, is the place of human beings in history, modern civilisation and existential transience. Both the music, and the libretto written by Ewa Lipska, refer to Krakow’s past social and cultural atmosphere.

The Mayor of the City of Krakow Mr. Jacek Majchrowski opened the new conference center in Krakow. The name of this new modern and impressive facility is ICE (International Conferences & Entertainment) Mr. Majchrowski said, that with the grand opening of ICE Krakow the city has reached other European cities. It is true that Krakow waited a long time for a Congress Centre. First plans of building this type of facility already appeared over 40 years ago. Designing took almost seven years.

This impressive establishment is located near the Vistula River. ICE Krakow has three main halls which are able to accommodate up to 2100, 600, and 300 participants. Furthermore special attention requires the second largest Hall (Theatre Hall) with movable elements allows to increase the floor area even more in case of using it for banquets or exhibitions.

The Conference Centre which can accommodate 3200 participants, also has conference rooms with adjustable sliding walls, 3-level foyer with spectacular view on the Wawel Castle, a multi-purpose exhibition hall and technical area.

Over 36.000 m² of conference space, an Auditorium ready to host 2000 people, a spacious and multifunctional foyer adapted for activities such as hosting of exhibitions and sponsor and exhibition stands; additionally, the building’s excellent location in the centre of Krakow – these are only some of the assets of the multifunctional ICE Congress Centre Krakow, an investment made by Krakow’s municipal government.

The centre is a modern world class building, meeting the requirements of international congress organisations, as well as the highest acoustic and stage mechanics standards. The building has been designed in such a way as to host various types of congresses, conferences, concerts, theatrical shows, exhibitions and other prestigious cultural and social events. The high standard of the building will place it among the most desired and exclusive congress centres in Europe.

ICE has 3 main halls: an Auditorium, a Theatre Hall and Chamber Hall, accommodating a maximum of 2100, 600 and 300 users respectively. Aside from the unique Auditorium Hall, the second biggest Theatre Hall is especially deserving of note: its folding seats will allow the floor area to be increased when being used for banquets or exhibitions. The centre, able to accommodate 200 participants, also offer a complex of conference halls with regulated moveable walls, a glazed three-floor foyer with a view of Wawel, a multifunctional exhibition hall and support areas.

Communication around the ICE has been specially integrated and includes parking space, bus terminal, place for transmission cars and two-level underground parking for 360 cars. Getting from the airport takes about 20 minutes, and the main railway station and bus station can be reached in just 15 minutes. (Copyright on the above text goes to Mice Agency)

The Career Expo was held in the foyer (I just love this word!) and exhibition space. The foyer is situated on the eastern side of the building (with a view of the Old City and Kazimierz) on three fl oors: F0 – 1800 m² (including the Theatre Hall), F1 – 1000 m² and F2 – 650 m². It can play the function of both an elegant public space for a viewing area and an exhibition space with the possibility of arranging sponsor and exhibition stands during congresses. This entire space is covered by an extensive grid of media access points (electrical connections, the Internet). For trade fairs, banquets, galas, balls and exhibitions this place is brilliant!

The walls are all glass so you have natural light for most of the day - there were no lights on until 4 PM and that was because the day was dark and sky was cloudy (with the ocasional Spring rain...). The bathroom facilities are numerous and can be easly found - even though some doors just look like they are part of the wall! There are additional small tables in the bathroom for the mothers in need and I really loved the light way they decorated the place. The visit left me yearning for more, so very soon I shall be buying some tickets to the opera or some concert, so I may visit the inside arena as well :) I would recommend this place at any time, no matter the weather. At least for the awesome views!

You might not remember but a while back my adorable husband brought me 2 friends to keep me company while he is not around. Some may think this is childish, some may say it is crazy, some may laugh and some may play along, but I always take them with me :) If you are following me on my Facebook page or on Tumblr you may have seen these pictures-stories but either way I wanted to have them here so you could enjoy them. They are part of a new series of photos that I will take so stay tuned for more and follow me ;)

It all started with this lovely picture taken by a dear friend of mine :) "The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot arrived safely today at the Palas Mall Complex in Iasi and rested a bit at Moo Cafe Photo taken courtesy of Claudia — at Palatul Culturii." It made me think and as the wheels started turning I figured out that The LadyBug had traveled with me for a while now but I never got to take pictures of her, so I started the series called "The LadyBug That Travels".

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug - The small LadyBug got tired so she needed to refresh herself with some lemonade and a nice meeting with friends — at Moo Café Palas.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot has an old friend dropping by for Easter - The Moose They are the official guardians of the Romanian-Iasi-Easter-Eggs and The LadyBug is very authoritative. She got to have a larger amount of eggs than The Moose but she has a kind soul so she will not eat them alone.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot - The LadyBug - and her friend - The Moose - are guarding the Easter eggs so that their friend Piscot - Craker - would not steal any until morrow night — with Catelul Piscot and The Cute Moose in Iasi, Romania.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot had a walk under the moon and reached the Union Square in Iasi, Romania. You can see in the background the beautiful Hotel Traian. Back in 1882, Gustave Eiffel, the "master of engineering", was finishing the last details of an architectural masterpiece. Not in Paris or Vienna, nor Saigon or the United States, but here in Iasi, on Romanian land, one of centers that gathered the knowledge and forces of the whole country. Two years before Gustave Eiffel became famous for the Statue of Liberty, the American symbol, and seven years before erecting the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the master from Cote d’Or gave birth to a neoclassical masterpiece here in Iasi, Unirii Square: TRAÍAN Grand Hotel — at Grand Hotel Traian.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot reached Piata Unirii and had a look at the 2 main Hotels in Iasi: Hotel Traian and Hotel Unirea. Here you can see in the background Hotel Unirea where you can reach its 13th floor and have a lovely meal at the restaurant that has a 360 degrees birds-eye-view over Iasi Totally worth a shot! — at Hotel UNIREA Iasi (Romania).

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot still has free space in her tummy for a special Creme Brulee with sour cherries. Om nom nom! — at Mignon Café.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot along with its friend - The Moose - had a short break today at lovely and kitten friendly Acaju. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for them, as they are fluffy) there was no kitty around... we did spot 2 though when we left the premises P.S. In case you have not noticed, the bag is made by Tolpi and it is made 100% out of leather I received it as a gift and fell in love with it at first sight... — at Acaju.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot - The LadyBug - and her friend - The Friendly Moose - dropped by Corso, one of the oldest pubs that The LadyBug remembers from her Highschool time Some Nutella pancakes were in order - not the best ones we have tasted but they were sweet and the lemonade have very fresh and tasty mint — at Terasa Corso.

The Home Of The Twisted Red Ladybug mascot and its faithful friend - The Moose - went out with some friends for a grill and ended up eating cucumbers with fresh green onion. Yum yum!

But fear not! If you will check on Facebook page or on Tumblr you will see more and you can check in from time to time to see where they have been to and what they are doing. The LadyBug and The Friendly Moose are very good friends so their stories do not stop here ;) Now have yourself a very lovely 1st of May and dont forget to be a child from time to time. Marzis Tale The Dream

Sometimes you just enter a bookstore and a book calls out for you. You did not plan on buying it, you never even heard of it, and yet it pulls you into her like the butterflies pull to the light. Its dangerous and yet you wish for it. You take the book into your arms and that is the fatal moment... you cannot simply let it go and you wish to take it home with you. That happens to me quite often. I love books and they call out to me and it is hard saying no to them. After all, they wish for a home of their own. They wish to make people experience emotions and they wish to stay on your shelve. One such fine book was for me Marzi by Marzena Sowa (Sowa means owl in Polish, and very fitting as the book is full of hidden wisdom from this lovely lady).

You could not tell that it is either a book or a comic book... It is something in between. Its a little girls story about the world that surrounded her as a child. It is written from the heart and it manages to touch the points that we think of as adults, when we remember our childhood. “I am Marzi, born in 1979, ten years before the end of communism in Poland. My father works at a factory, my mother at a dairy. Social problems are at their height. Empty stores are our daily bread. I’m scared of spiders and the world of adults doesn’t seem like a walk in the park.”

Told from a young girl’s perspective, Marzena Sowa’s memoir of a childhood shaped by politics feels remarkably fresh and immediate. Structured as a series of vignettes that build on one another, Marzi is a compelling and powerful coming-of-age story that portrays the harsh realities of life behind the Iron Curtain while maintaining the everyday wonders and curiosity of childhood. With open and engaging art by Sylvain Savoia, Marzi is a moving and resonant story of an ordinary girl in turbulent, changing times.

Now living in France, Marzena Sowa looks back at her past, at her roots, and with the help of her significant other manages to bring to life her own self, in the younger version. The book I have contains the series of the first 4 comic books she published in France. The original publication has been in 5 different volumes but I am truly happy I found this version where they are (almost) all in one. In gallery form, paperback, from Vertigo, it is very lightweighted. The color palette is limited but truly I can say that Sylvain Savoia (the ilustrator of the book) did wonders! My version has 240 pages but I did not read it all at once. The book deserves at least a few sittings and it is lovely and warm hearted and sincere that you really wish you would not finish it.

The story, told from a childs perspective is wonderful! Done in small vignettes you can take smaller portions and not a mouthful. Pick and choose as much as you can swallow, as you will come back earning for more. When I finished Marzi I wanted yet another story. I wanted to know more of her childhood. I wanted to know how her dreams came true and how she ended up in France. Her name was all a dream (marzen = dreams, in Polish language) and she was a dreamer. Though times were hard she manages to make you smile and see how people could be happy from little things. She makes you see how inventive and creative children were back then, without TV/Internet/Computer Games and what-nots. I recommend everyone to read it, and enjoy it. Especially if you were part of the Communist Block, you will appreciate and understand it even more. So I say you run and order the book now, and let me know how you feel about it! :)

A LadyBug Who Liked Marzi Very Much

The Complete Maus By Art Spiegelman

Remember how a while back I was telling you about this wonderful comic book I read? I was telling you back then about Marzi, written by Marzena Sowa. She was recalling her childhood from the communistic Poland. Today I wanted to share with you yet another comic book close to my heart, due to the subject it is touching. I have always loved reading history books and from everything the Second World War was the most interesting part for me... it could be subconsiously the reason I decided to give Krakow a change and stay here :) The book that I wish to tell you about today is named MAUS - The Complete Maus By Art Spiegelman to be more precise (maus = mouse in German language - the jews are portrait in the comic book always as mice.

Combined for the first time in 2003, The Complete Works include Maus I: A Survivors Tale and Maus II - the complete story of Vladek Spiegelman and his wife, living and surviving in Hitlers Europe. By addressing the horror of the Holocaust through cartoons, the author captures the everyday reality of fear and is able to explore the guilt, relief and extraordinary sensation of survival - and how the children of survivors are in their own way affected by the trials of their parents. A contemporary classic of immeasurable significance.

The comic book is dark and serious but very touching. Known worldwide it has achieved the wonderful feat of being the only comic book awarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 1992! FYI: The Pulitzer Prize is a U.S. award for achievements in newspaper and online journalism, literature and musical composition. It was established by Hungarian-American publisher Joseph Pulitzer and is administered by Columbia University in New York City. According to the administrators of the Pulitzer Prize the correct pronunciation of the name should sound like the verb pull, as in "Pull it, sir". The Pulitzer Committee frankly stated they found the work difficult to classify. "Maus" remains the only comic strip to be so honored.

Reading the book is an experience in itself. It transposes you into Arts place and makes you understand the relationship he has with his father. This is a story about survival and love. Love inside a family, the kind of love that makes you never to let go. You would never let go of your family if you love them. Art shows his guilt - that probably was rooted deep and stayed with him all his life... - when it come to the relationship with his father. Also, I believe it takes a great deal of courage to face the world and show everyone how ones relationships truly were. We always have the dendency to hide and to lie that we are ok, we are fine, when in fact we have deep holes inside of us... that hurt!

I loved how in the second part, the one about New York and about the period after the war, we can actually see a picture of Arts father. It is a warm and full image of a young man that although he has faced the horrors of war, still has the strenght and the positivism to look forward. I loved Arts father, I loved Vladek, and they way he always choose to see the bright side of life. He was cautios and he was always thinking of the future and the future of the ones he loved.

The book is not only about the extremely hurtful experience of living in Poland during the time when jews were persecuted but it also extends to the future. We see Vladek being marked by the experiences he has been through... he collects thing, scraps and odd bits and ends and feels the need to attach himself more to objects. He fears that history will repeat itself. That is why he even shows Art how he would build a safe place, just in case he will need it one day. He shows him how to create fake walls and ilusions and teaches him the tips and tricks on getting along with the guards and stealing trades. As Vladek said... it is always good to know how to do a bit of everything. The events that Vladek has been through not only affect his parents and himself but also the generations after. Art was born in the Sweden and lives in the States, yet he feels the influence still.

Art Spiegelman uses animals to represent different races and nationalities. Its a very effective metaphor. Jews are drawn as mice, which reflects back to the anti-Semitic stereotype of Jews being subhuman rats. Germans are cats; they prey on Jewish mice. Americans are dogs, they fight the German cats. The French are frogs. The Polish are pigs; Nazis considered the Polish people to be pigs. Jewish Mice sometimes pretend to be Polish pigs to hide from the German Cats. They do this by wearing pigs masks.

I recommend reading this comic book with all my heart. If you are a fan of history and if you are not, if you are a fan of comic books and if you are not. Surely this book will touch you and make you think of the horrors passed and the power that people truly have inside themselves. For me this book is also about courage, endurance and love.
